CEO, Innisfil Public Library
Susan Downs has been Chief Librarian/CEO for Innisfil Public Library since 1989. Her passion for connecting the community with information and for making sure that people who live outside of large urban areas are not disadvantaged, led to her serving for more than twenty-three of those years in many cross- functional positions with the Town of Innisfil. While retaining her Chief Librarian role, she has also been Manager of IT, Director of Corporate Services, Director of Strategic Planning and most recently Community Transformation Strategist for the Town.
Her relevant accomplishments include the implementation for the Town’s first GIS, an Open Source platform for the Library’s Catalogue and Local History database, participation in the development of a fibre network which connected all Town and Library buildings, and the creation of one of the first Maker Spaces and Digital Media Labs in an Ontario Public Library. In the last few months she was a member of the team that wrote the Town’s Open Data Policy.
Susan has led the library through municipal amalgamations, automation projects, three Library building projects as well as extensive changes in technologies and services. She is presently leading the development of a Community Engagement Strategy, a Culture Plan, a Smart/Resilient Citizen initiative and is an active member of the Rizzardo Health & Wellness Centre construction and design team.
